Mecca - From the Earliest Times to the Present Day
Martin Lings
In this work, one of his last, the eminent scholar of Islam Martin Lings discusses the significance of the pilgrimage to Mecca in light of the Abrahamic tradition. Drawing on his own experience of the pilgrimage, first in 1946 and then again in 1978, he refers to traditional sources and describes how the Hajj, proclaimed and established by Abraham and Ishmael some 4000 years ago and renewed by the Prophet Muhammad fourteen hundred years ago, is performed without interruption to this day, its spiritual significance as profound and timeless as ever.
