A twentieth-century Sufi saint
Martin Lings
Almost a prerequisite for any serious study of Sufism in a European language: that was the judgment of Seyyed Hossein Nasr when he reviewed the first edition of this book. According to the Journal of Near Eastern Studies, it is one of the most thoroughly researched and engaging books on Sufism ever written by a Western scholar. Nothing in it is secondhand. The author lets the Sufis speak for themselves and conveys to the reader a vivid impression of the life of a North African Sufi order through a series of unusual and captivating texts, mostly translated from Arabic. Against this backdrop stands the unforgettable figure of the Algerian Sheikh, who led the order after the death of his master in 1909 until his own death in 1934. The final chapters are mainly dedicated to his writings, which include profound aphorisms, and they conclude with a small anthology of his mystical poems.
